Linear Tape Open (lto) is a technological format adopted by a number of companies including Tandberg Data, IBM, HP, Certance and others.
Prior to adoption of lto, customers faced major problems when they decided to change backup and restore vendors since competitive vendor systems were not compatible. With lto, this problem has been solved.
Tandberg Data and others have agreed to the linear tape open convention to provide customers with the versatility to switch between vendors while retaining the same data format and storage tapes. So an LTO tape from Tandberg Data is compatible with LTO equipment offered by HP, IBM, Certance and others.
