Symptom :  The Removable Storage Manager in Windows 2000 does not show my drive, or does not show a tape loaded

Cause :  The Removable Storage Manager in Windows 2000 does not show my drive, or does not show a tape loaded

Resolution :

  1. Confirm that the Windows 2000 tape device driver is loaded. To check if the tape device driver is loaded, do the following:

  2. Make sure the tape drive is not requesting a cleaning. If the tape drive is requesting a cleaning, the Removable Storage Manager will not show a tape loaded in the drive. (Reference Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 228384.) For information about cleaning your specific model of tape drive, refer to Knowledge Base item Do I need to clean my tape drive? Note for VXA users: The VXA tape drive does not use its LEDs to indicate when a cleaning is needed while a tape is loaded in the drive. Make sure the VXA drive is empty when checking for the cleaning LED.

  3. Check if the tape drive is listed in the Removable Storage Manager (RSM). Open the RSM by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Manage from the drop-down menu. Under Storage expand the RSM. Under Physical Locati ons you should see the Ecrix or Exabyte tape drive.

If the Ecrix or Exabyte tape drive is not shown under Physical Locations, make sure that it was the Exabyte Windows 2000 driver which was loaded. If an NT driver was loaded, the tape drive may not be shown. (Reference Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 216328.)

  4. Load a tape into the drive. Wait until the tape load is completed before continuing.

  5. Inject tape. In the RSM, expand Physical Locations. Expand the Ecrix or Exabyte drive. Click on Drives. Even if the drive has a tape in it, the status might be shown as "Empty". If this is the case, then right-click on the Ecrix or Exabyte drive under Physical Locations and select Inject from the drop-down menu.
