4  Data Transfer Rate 4.1  Introduction This section shows the performance improvements in the data transfer rates of the IBM Ultrium 2 when compared with the IBM Ultrium 1. The tests are executed using a benchmarking tool that writes fixed blocks from memory.  The tool reports back the throughput as a function of the amount of data written divided by the time it took for the operation to complete.  The tool takes the measurements between wraps, removing any performance boosts at the beginning when the data buffer is being filled.  The cartridge fill times in Section 5 take all factors in to account for a sustained GB/hr comparison.  The purpose of these measurements is to show how the tape drive performs when streaming data. 4.2  Data Transfer Rate Performance Summary The following summarizes the performance results with the IBM Ultrium 2 relative to the IBM Ultrium 1.  Refer to Section 4.4 for detailed results. The IBM Ultrium 2 demonstrates the following performance improvements when compared to the IBM Ultrium 1.   Native data transfer rate improves up to 133% to 35 MB/sec 2:1 compressible transfer rate improves up to 133% to 70 MB/sec 4.3  Test Environment The description of the test environment is as follows. AIX 5.1.0.25 Operating Systems: FC 6203: Dual-Channel Ultra3 SCSI (Type 4-Y) Placement:  64 bit 3.3V Slot at 66 MHz Adapter: 7025-6F1 pSeries 620 Processor: Hardware and Software Environment Page 7 of 20 p1   p2   p3   p4   p5   p6   p7   p8   p9   p10   p11   p12
