2  Executive Overview The IBM LTO Ultrium 2 outperforms the IBM LTO Ultrium 1 in each of the following areas: Capacity The IBM Ultrium 2 tape drive can store double the data on an Ultrium 2 cartridge (200 GB native, 400 GB with 2:1 compressible data) as compared to an IBM Ultrium 1 drive using an Ultrium 1 cartridge (100GB native, 200 GB with 2:1 compressible data). Data Transfer Rates The IBM Ultrium 2 performs up to 133% better in native transfer rate, with a rate of 35 MB/sec, when compared to the IBM Ultrium 1 at up to 15 MB/sec.  With 2:1 compressible data the IBM Ultrium 2 can achieve a data rate of up to 70 MB/sec as compared to the IBM Ultrium 1 at up to 30 MB/sec. Cartridge Fill Time (non-compressible data) The IBM Ultrium 2 can fill an Ultrium 2 200 GB cartridge up to 12% faster with a sustained data rate up to 126% better when compared to the IBM Ultrium 1 filling an Ultrium 1 100GB cartridge.   The IBM Ultrium 2 can fill an Ultrium 1 100 GB cartridge 24% faster with a sustained data rate 32% better when compared to the IBM Ultrium 1. The IBM Ultrium 2 can fill an Ultrium 2 200 GB cartridge in 1 hour 44 minutes with a sustained data rate of up to 122.9 GB/hr.  The IBM Ultrium 2 can fill an Ultrium 1 100 GB cartridge in 1 hour 29 minutes with a sustained data rate of up to 71.9 GB/hr.  The IBM Ultrium 1 can fill an Ultrium 1 100 GB Cartridge in 1 hour 58 minutes with a sustained data rate of up to 54.5 GB/hr. Speed Matching A new feature, dynamic speed matching, allows the IBM Ultrium 2 drive to adjust the drive’s native data rate as closely as possible to the net host data rate (after data compressibility has been factored out).  This provides the dual benefit of reducing the number of repositions and improving throughput performance.   At net host data rates between 17-32 MB/sec the average throughput performance benefit is 13% when compared to speed matching disabled. At speeds below 17 MB/sec, the drive’s 64MB internal buffer masks the performance degradation of repositions.  At speeds greater than 32 MB/sec, the drive is operating at its fastest possible speed (same speed as speed matching disabled).   At net host data rates between 1-32 MB/sec, the average reposition reduction benefit is 68% when compared to speed matching disabled.  At speeds greater than 32 MB/sec, the drive is operating at its fastest possible speed (same speed as speed matching disabled).
