1 Introduction
The IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 2 tape drive (IBM Ultrium 2) is the second generation tape
drive in the IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium family of products. IBM Ultrium 2 offers the
following significant enhancements (other features and enhancements exist, but are beyond the
scope of this paper):
y Double capacity (200GB native, 400 GB with 2:1 compressible data)
y More than double native data transfer rate (35 MB/sec)
y Reduced power consumption
y Faster cartridge fill times (for both Ultrium 1 and Ultrium 2 media)
y Faster data access times
y Faster rewind times
y Faster load and unload times
y Adaptive speed matching capability
y Ultrium 1 backwards read/write media capability with improved transfer rates
y Ultra-160 SCSI interface option
y Fibre Channel 2 Gigabit interface option
y Larger internal data buffer (64 MB)
This paper discusses the performance improvement of the IBM Ultrium 2 tape drive compared to
the first generation IBM Ultrium (IBM Ultrium 1) tape drive relative to the following
characteristics:
y Capacity
y Data Transfer Rates
y Cartridge Fill Times
Additionally, this paper discusses the potential benefits of speed matching in terms of increased
throughput, as well as in reducing reposition events(start/stop).
