1  Introduction The IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 2 tape drive (IBM Ultrium 2) is the second generation tape drive in the IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium family of products.  IBM Ultrium 2 offers the following significant enhancements (other features and enhancements exist, but are beyond the scope of this paper): Double capacity (200GB native, 400 GB with 2:1 compressible data) More than double native data transfer rate (35 MB/sec) Reduced power consumption Faster cartridge fill times (for both Ultrium 1 and Ultrium 2 media) Faster data access times Faster rewind times Faster load and unload times Adaptive speed matching capability Ultrium 1 backwards read/write media capability with improved transfer rates Ultra-160 SCSI interface option Fibre Channel 2 Gigabit interface option Larger internal data buffer (64 MB) This paper discusses the performance improvement of the IBM Ultrium 2 tape drive compared to the first generation IBM Ultrium (IBM Ultrium 1) tape drive relative to the following characteristics: Capacity Data Transfer Rates Cartridge Fill Times Additionally, this paper discusses the potential benefits of speed matching in terms of increased throughput, as well as in reducing reposition events(start/stop).
