Exabyte AME with SmartClean™ tape cartridges provide the highest level of data integrity and data availability in the industry. Designed specifically for the Mammoth-2 (M2™) drive, AME with SmartClean cleans the drive periodically and reduces the frequency with which the Mammoth cleaning cartridge must be used. Each cartridge with Exabyte's SmartClean technology contains a 2-meter length of cleaning material with the AME media. This cleaning material removes elements that can cause read/write errors. A sophisticated monitoring system built into the Mammoth-2 drive determines when it's time to clean and then moves the cleaning material into position to clean the heads.

SmartClean safely removes tape lubricant staining without causing head wear. Cleanings takes place as the drive requires it - and won't impact tape operations. With normal use, SmartClean reduces the need to execute separate cleaning actions with the Mammoth cleaning cartridge.

Compatible Tape Drives

Refer to the following chart to see the Exabyte tape drives that can read and write to AME tapes with SmartClean. If the table cell is blank then the drive cannot use that length of AME tape. Note that AME with SmartClean is not the same as standard AME.

Your tape library can also read and write to AME tape with SmartClean if the tape drive or drives contained in your library are listed above. Exabyte libraries that may contain drives that use AME tape with SmartClean include the EZ17™, 215M, 430M, X80, X200, 210 or 220.

Exabyte AME Advanced Metal Evaporated media is designed for use in Exabyte MammothTape™ Technology tape drives only. Please verify that your tape drive supports AME media prior to using this data cartridge. For optimal performance and reliability, Exabyte recommends only SmartClean™ AME media for Mammoth-2 (M2™) tape drives and libraries to reduce the frequency with which the Mammoth cleaning cartridge must be used. Mammoth-2 can use other AME media but will require regular cleaning with an Exabyte Mammoth cleaning cartridge.
